What is PT-141?

PT-141, also known as Bremelanotide, is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide and melanocortin receptor agonist originally developed from Melanotan II during research into melanocortin signaling. Unlike medications that work by increasing blood flow, PT-141 primarily acts within the central nervous system, influencing neural pathways involved in sexual desire and arousal.

PT-141 is one of the few peptides to receive FDA approval as a prescription drug. Under the brand name Vyleesi, it was approved in 2019 for the treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women.

Mechanism of Action

Researchers have found that PT-141 may:
